In 1767, therefore, through his tool, Townshend, Parliament levied new port duties on a few articles, including glass, lead, paper, and tea. Samuel Adams felt that only slaves would submit to such high-handed oppression. When the Sugar Act was implemented in 1764 and the Stamp Act, the following year, Adams was a major opponent, arguing that the acts went against the British Constitution as laid out by Parliament, stating that they would hurt the economy, and supporting boycotts to repeal the taxes.
His was truly a life of distinguished service to his country. He was known for his ability to harness popular resentment against Parliament’s authority to tax the colonies in a productive manner. He continued to serve in the Congress during the War and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The object of the committee was to communicate with other British North American colonies in order to share methods of resistance to taxation without representation. But the colonists were not fooled by these new measures, they did not like the power the government had over the distribution of tea and they were suspicious over their intentions.
